Vino Camino
Sunday 7th May 2023
On Sunday the 7th May, 2023, we hosted our 11th Camino with the Henschke family where a select group of guests discovered treasures of the Barossa on an extraordinary tour with two of its founding families.
This Tasting Australia event offered a rare day of dedication, passion, knowledge and respect for the environment.
While this year saw the first instance of rain in our 11 year history, guests remained undeterred as we strolled through the country air and shared wine and food while exploring heritage Eden Valley vineyards. John and Jan Angas and revered winemakers Stephen and Prue Henschke shared stories as they led the group through the adjoining properties and enjoyed food by local food icon, Mark McNamara.
The experience began at the Henschke Cellar Door, where guests met the family at the heart of their winemaking establishment. Next they travelled Gnadenberg Church alongside the Henschke Hill of Grace vineyard and experienced the Barossa’s living food heritage with canapés and Henschke Johanne Ida Selma Blanc de Noir sparkling. They then continued up a gentle hill to share riesling – the region’s ultimate white wine – with McNamara’s famous Lachsschinken Pie and freshly shucked oysters.
John and Jan Angas guided guests past Ronald Angas’s 1912 shiraz plantings, the fruit for Henschke Mount Edelstone and the catalyst for these two families becoming entwined as neighbours, collaborators and friends.
A longer stretch-out saw the group amble past family shiraz vineyards to the Mt Edelstone peak, with 360-degree views of northern Eden Valley. Here we savoured the penultimate tasting, a 2018 shiraz trio of Hill of Grace, Hutton Vale Farm and Mount Edelstone matched to more delicious canapés by Mark McNamara.
A final wander down the hill to Hutton Vale farm’s homestead and cellar Door and a relaxed Barossa lunch was served with prized Hutton Vale Farm lamb as the hero dish served alongside a special selection of family wines and live music.
This was a day in the life as a true Barossan.
