Hutton Vale Farm is an award-winning boutique wine producer; the Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache vines are taken from some of Australia’s oldest plantings.
In 1987, John Duval, then Penfold’s Grange winemaker, mentored the Angas family in making their first wine, to help them to appreciate the fruit they were growing.
The quality and intensity of colour and flavour of the grapes were powerful factors in their conviction to begin making small batch wines. John Duval was also convinced and continues to purchase parcels of fruit for his own label.
GRENACHE MATARO
The grenache vineyard was planted by Colin Angas in the 1960’s. Some of the original plantings failed to take to their new home and had to be replaced. New cuttings were hastily acquired, which time revealed to be mataro. No one considered to start over again and the mataro makes a splendid partner for the grenache.
SHIRAZ
The pedigree and provenance of the shiraz vineyard at Hutton Vale Farm is impressive. The ‘old’ block was planted in the 1960s with cuttings taken from the nearby Mt Edelstone vineyard. 55 years down the track, the old dry grown vines continue to survive with a little more nurturing in their middle age, using mulching and mid row management. Eight acres planted to the East in the 1990s from cuttings taken from the ‘old’ block are the “grandchildren” of the original plantings at Mt Edelstone.

RIESLING
Colin Angas, guided by Peter Lehmann realised the potential for the Eden Valley to be an exceptional region for riesling and planted a vineyard on a gentle slope in the 1960’s. The top section with deeper soil produces plump bunches of fruit that showcase fresh aromatics and citrus zing. The bottom section, tends to produce tightly structured fruit with crisp, vibrant acidity. Both parcels together make an outstanding riesling wine.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
John considered the cooler climate of Eden Valley an opportunity to plant cabernet sauvignon in the late 1990’s, in the same way his father had done with riesling in the 1960’s. The quality of the fruit grown suggests it has a long future with low yields and the cooler Eden Valley climate ripening the fruit to its full flavour.
